It was a dead heat in most polls and then after the assassination attempt most everyone had trump winning.
As time went on Kamala only fell further and further behind.
I'm not saying polls are correct, or even that they do any better than a coin flip, but in the trump vs harris situation, the polls were majorly more right than they were wrong.
