The time period of the stay is a pretty weak argument, it doesn’t matter if they stayed 20 years+, that doesn’t magically make it legal. People that immigrated with legit paperwork wait years. Why should they even bother doing all that when they can enter illegally and start working for wages far better than their home countries.
