Depends on the part of the island - in Victoria (Colwood) it's about $1.4m for a new 2800sf detached that's comparable to the duplexes I'm seeing here for $1-1.2m. Slightly bigger lot in Colwood - for example:

I would say the location of that Colwood house is less convenient than being in Calgary - both to get to amenities and for people who want to visit (short plane ride versus a ferry/drive). The weather would be WAY better though (and no crazy politics)
I love island life so that'd be my first choice but the wife wants to be close to some friends so Calgary is appealing that way.
All that said, I'd still rather be in Vancouver.
