Yeah the ZF9 is for FWD transverse so it cost and PACKAGING (space) is way more difficult.
They did an ok job since Aisin/Toyota FWD 8AT also had major drivability issues.
Transmissions are just terribly difficult.
Even if you copy physical layout (which GM & Ford did for 8/10AT), thermo/fluid dynamics makes the GM8 and Ford10 downshifts terrible.
TCUs are another ballgame, they're just as expensive to develop as the trans itself.
