CarPlay is absolutely better with iDrive. We have cars with and without.
It's not just the iDrive dial. It's the fact that there are dedicated, hardware buttons laid out surrounding the dial, which your fingers & thumb naturally rest on.

That means you can context-switch very fluidly between music/audiobook/phonecall, and your navigation.
I modified our i3 so that the screen is also touch-enabled.
Having
both is absolutely the ultimate solution.
