Especially when you have multi-kids, where just preserving the family legacy is not enough. Thus, it motivated me to keep going even though if it was just me and my wife, we have gotten our "fuck you" money long ago. Probably not enough to live in absolute luxury, but enough for day-to-day expense without ever working again.
With kids, it just made me to want more. I have actually set my financial goal for the next 10yrs on surpassing my parents networth at some point. Kinda my last crusade/rebel against my parents when they told me and my brother that we need to learn how to work on our own because their wealth would go to charity to help others. So that one day I could tell them, "it's ok. I can do just fine by myself."

Seems like you could simply pull that same line on your kids and just retire on those "charity" funds  .
