The earlier gen Coyotes used a crank driven oil pump, but they used powdered metal gears. They are perfectly fine for a stock engine, the issue comes when people put belt driven superchargers on them, which puts extra stress on the front of the motor and the gears. There are aftermarket billet gears available that fix the problem.
The coyote is a crazy platform, this guy is running 6.04's in the 1/4 (~3000RWHP) with a stock block and mostly stock GT350 (Voodoo) heads.
So far 11 years and 110,000kms the 5.0 in my F150 (and several thousand of that towing my trailer) has been pretty bulletproof.
