Our dollar is weak and I'm guessing some components are brought in through the US which might be subjected to tariffs (hard to keep track). When you're paying retail prices on all these components, the price adds up pretty quickly over buying a pre-built system which has better economies of scale.

If your wife doesn't have any crazy needs, then +1 for refurb business PCs like roastpuff suggested. If you're open to laptops, sometimes CC has good deals. I picked up a new HP laptop last year for $500 with a USB-dock and Windows 11 Pro. A Windows 11P license alone is already $260.
