They just want a car that is comfy / roomy, reliable, and not particularly exciting. But the GT-S trim is the exact opposite of comfy and not-exciting. The paint job alone is already drawing too much attention.

Have you seen the mods they do to Camry, Accord, Civic and CR-V in south central LA or the Bronx/Wash Heights?
These cars are status symbols back home in PR/DR so they do this to live out a 'dream' or to signal to the rest of their community.
It's no different from a pandem civic or widebody RX7, just a different audience.
