Here in Toronto/GTA, bus drivers/operators have a door/window where they don't talk to you whatsoever. Directions? Get bent. Need help? Get off the bus. Don't pay your fare? No fucks given. It was an interesting world when I moved here and was confused at how little interaction they have with passengers.

Ah... I don't know that that's universally true / true anymore...
Lately my 2 year old has been really into buses, so we've been riding TTC, GO, and VIVA buses up and down Yonge street on morning weekends for fun.
I don't remember seeing any barriers. And they were always happy to chat, give me advice about routes/transfers, chat with my kid playing along with the whole "holy shit, yes that's the driver from Wheels On The Bus!!!" schtick.
