It's longer than that, but it's similarly because of material degradation. It's the reason you're (supposed to) replace a motorcycle helmet every 5 years. Helmet life is likely rated to this shorter duration because of the heavy sweat exposure.
I don't disagree with the general idea that the industry around kid gear is totally preying on parents (i.e. organic muslin cotton and $1000+ strollers): with that, you're right. But this
isn't one of those cases: with car seats and helmets, we're not talking "belief systems", we're talking real engineering limitations vs empirical crash test data.
I think you mean well, and I don't mean to be antagonistic. I just worry we have new parents on here who might read your confidently dismissive commentary and wind up forgoing their own research. That could be pretty consequential.
