Yes complete sets (100% LEGO, no stickers, custom minifigs, full colour coil bound instructions, parts sorted in numbered bags, premium packaging) are very expensive...
Some of the larger models are USD$2000+!!
Cheaper alternative is to just buy digital instructions and stickers. A lot of knock-off brands are selling military sets as well (often using stolen designs).
I think I'm done though. The only "modern" US fighter jet missing from my collection is a F-16. The F-14 kit from Brickveteran is my most expensive model to date. The Jolly Rogers one is built from Planebricks' printed parts, digital instructions, and the remaining parts I gathered separately.
