Transfer can be done in a lot of ways. But the whole idea of red pocket is not the money, nor the amount, but rather a symbol of gesture and care toward your love ones. Neither my folks nor my in laws expect money from us as they don't need anything from us.
But we do it as a way to show that we care about them and the tradition. We go as far as always getting brand new bills (no exceptions down to 1 dollar bill) and try to meet in person one way or the other. The number grows pretty much yearly as a symbol that we are being better off.
Whatever amount I give to them, they would just give back to the kids (and hence back to us) with maybe a few hundred extra as my folks are usually lazy to go to bank and just grab whatever they have at home. Often we'd discuss between us to make sure no one end up putting more money than the other. Sure, we might prep a few smaller red pockets for kids from less close F&F, but they are usually $50-100 depending on how close the F&F is, but again, they would end up giving that amount back to our kids.
That's why it's almost always net zero. I can't even think of a year where between the amount I withdrew vs. what I deposited being more than a few $100 apart.
