In the meantime, I've setup NextDNS to filter out ads and unsavoury websites. Seems to be somewhat legit and we don't really have anything to steal. Quick check it does seem to work and it can enforce safe search and filtering, and will allow you to block Social Media, porn, etc etc. It also features a parental lock so the kids can't purposely or accidentally disable it. For the time being it'll do. It's free and allows 300k requests a month which should be sufficient.

I bought a Chromebook Duet (tablet + keyboard) and I'm able to lock it down to the individual website(s) that my daughter can visit. Actually, it notifies me for approval for each new website or new app and blocks it by default. I currently have google search disabled so she can only visit the education websites that her teacher sent her for reading/math.
I'm guessing iPad may have similar functionality, but Chromebooks can be had for cheap and we have multiple profiles set up so that the Duet is my primary device when we travel since it uses a desktop browser instead of a mobile/tablet one, and is way smaller than a laptop to carry.
[EDIT]This one when it was on sale for $349
