I find it hard to believe that the generals would actually refuse the presidential order to execute a ground invasion. They can certainly object the decision to deploy a ground invasion, but refusing an order when the order is not illegal is serious stuff in the military. If someone is smart and hardy enough to make it to the rank of a general, they know how there is always going to be political elements in dealing with orders from above.
What I think has more likely happened is -- the generals are telling Trump stuff he doesn't want to hear. Maybe that a ground invasion involving too high a troops numbers is needed to secure whatever military objective Trump wants to achieve. That a sufficiently high casualty number is needed for Trump's goal. That it'll take too long to achieve the objective that Trump wants -- remember, Trump would almost certainly want to be able to deliver something substantial before the midterms start.
One of the defining features of Trump term #2 vs term #1 is -- the Orange Man only seems to want Yes-man around him, not actual real experts. He just wants lackeys to do his bidding, but as he is finding out now in the Iran War, things don't always happen just bcos he wants to see them happen.
