What really makes a difference with AC is whether the heater hoses have a diverter valve or not. If it doesn't have one then even with the air flaps closed you've still got a huge block of coolant radiating heat into the cabin. My Grand Cherokee didn't come with one, and when I added it the difference was pretty noticeable.
