it was pretty stupid and expected suspense, but isn't there something usually at the end of the train that is WAY lower to clear the path for the next train or something?

no they are designed high like that all throughout the train just for this exact scenario, not incase random people get stuck under it. It's like that incase someone is working under it at a train yard.
