Actually it might be possible to buy a data plan alone since there are providers that supply USB aircards to access the internet.

I've had carputers in my cars for 10 years and I always wished there was something that was easy to install like this but I don't think I'd ever use this interface in a car. It's just way too complicated to use while driving. Carputers still have the advantage, you get to choose your interface, you can get better sound quality with better components if you want and you can run full blown programs instead of apps.
