My dad worked there for 20+ years. If you ever ate there after 5PM Tuesday to Sunday, you've probably seen or met my dad.
It's probably your last stereotypical greasy/dirty HK style diner in all of Vancouver. Sticky floors, interior from the 1980s, picnic table covers, open noodle kitchen, rude waitresses.. you get the idea. That food raised me and my two brothers, and while this could be the nostalgia hitting me, I've yet to have a better wonton noodle soup.
My mom spoke to the owner recently and they said they're thinking of closing down the restaurant, so visit the restaurant if you're in the area and this type of food/vibe is up your alley. I personally want to revisit the restaurant myself for a meal, but it's a little difficult since my dad passed away recently in 2021 and I'm sure the feels are gonna hit me hard.
BTW, my dad made that sign in front of the noodle kitchen. He used to make a new one every couple of years when the prices changed, but it's probably at least a decade old now since he retired in 2015 - https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FSDBRe8VgAAHVAw?format=jpg |
LOL, that sign was the first thing I looked at as I walked in. Was your dad the guy at the front wonton station?

But hey it still exists!
I used to work in produce alley during school and Kent's fed me many a times for a whole day with one box of food.

He never really mentioned his exact role, but he did everything from taking orders to delivering them, making schedules, etc. He always wore black shoes, dress pants, and a white dress shirt to work.
He would always do random things off the clock for the place. In exchange, our fridge was always filled with take out from the restaurant, lol.

My son told me they got broken into not that long ago.
The place is a gem. Fast. By the time I drop off my sons and sometimes my daughter to look for an open parking spot, they're back with bags of food. | A lot of comments on Facebook says the owners of this place just let all the crack heads hassle the customers and beg INSIDE the store. Also repeated window smashings, unsafe for customers etc.
Chinatown really feels like it’s past the point of no return when stuff like this can’t even survive

I always find a space and it's is 100x better than the lot you are referring to. it makes going to the plaza do-able.

I had lots of good memories of Chinatown back in the days. It would be nice to go and reminisce, but with all the junkies roaming around, it's hard to get motivated to ever go back even just for a walk.

I went to a medical building at Davie and Burrard yesterday for some tests
Jesus Christ it’s a full blown homeless encampment there beside the hospital. While sitting in my car in the oarkade 2 native guys come in and start smoking crack with the one guy shadow boxing a concrete pillar and intimidating people walking in to their cars
Another lovely experience downtown

Burnaby Palace Restaurant has those vibes for me, been around since I was a kid. Even dated one of the owner's daughters for a bit back in school.

Maybe on the edge for restaurants like Phnom Penh, but yeah.
Even folks like my mom don't go to Chinatown anymore. Growing up as a low income family, we went to Chinatown all the time to visit my grandma, grab cheap groceries, BBQ meats and dry goods from Rice World.
Ever since Crystal Mall opened in the early 2000s, she goes to Chinatown maybe twice a year max, mostly to buy incense and paper money and to deposit/withdraw stuff from the safety deposit box.

Is on Lok any good? My wife’s family used to go all the time but they have a story of stopping when it changed owners? May be similar to what’s being discussed here
We’re a short walk away and have always been on the fence about going lol.. usually if we’re getting Chinese we get delivery from Grandview on Fraser or maybe go to Cindy’s palace

Coin exchange at J&M Friday and Saturday. https://www.mint.ca/en/events/2023-0...-exchange-qeii
I already have new rolls of the coins, but these are basically free, in the sense you don't have to pay anything more than face value. Won't be considered uncirculated, but most people wouldn't know any better or care.
I imagine the lineups would be a bit crazy, and you know some people would be going back multiple times............... it is what it is.

Traffic light question............
Broadway eastbound at Underhill. Dead end. Two lights. One for left and one for right. Both red lights are usual solid red. Green is an arrow. I got honked today for mot turning right on the red.
My thinking is, why bother having the green arrow? Everybody knows that you can turn right on a red, unless otherwise noted.
Dude who honked at me, said you can turn on a red no matter what the green light is all about.
Okay, so what's the official ruling on this? In Washington, they have these flashing yellow turning lights that basically says you can proceed to turn if no car is coming.........

Pretty sure if you couldn't turn right on red, it would be a red arrow light rather than a regular one

That intersection lacks a No right turn on red sign, so turning allowed. https://www.drivesmartbc.ca/turns/right-turn-red
Think of this situation. Someone that doesn't know the area and that the green will be an arrow. They drive up to the light and see red, they make the turn and get pulled over because they didn't wait for the green arrow. Unfair for the driver to be penalized for not knowing that the green is an arrow.
The green arrow is more likely to be redundant in trying to tell drivers not to go straight.

In that intersection, is it possible that Underhill southbound and northbound can be signalled separately?
Like Green for northbound traffic, while red southbound, which then makes the right turn light for Broadway traffic green?
