most of the backpacking ive done was through parks and so there were no fires allowed, except off the coast on the island.
i'd say just get right into it and do a 3 nighter. it's still short enough that if you forget to bring somethign or overpack something it's not the end of the world. a big backpacking skill is learning to be adaptive. mistakes are part of it and most people you meet on the trail are not experienced either. 2 years ago when i did the juan de fuca (highly recommend for first timers), it was the first trip for 4/5 of us. as long as you have the basic gear and pack enough food, don't worry about weight too much for the first time!
my brother wanted to get out of the house yesterday, and i wanted to practice on a friends old nikon d40 (noob photographer does NOT do my noobness justice lololol). ended up going to the Brothers Creek loop up in the british properties. really easy, nice and relaxed. weather held out for most of it, tried raining near the end. perfect easy afternoon out of the house.
going up to sawblade falls tomorrow so i'll update some more pics when i get them. wanted to get out of the house so i did a gentle walk in richmond, which we call the poop chute (the iowna beach jetty). absolutely no hike LOL but its about a 7-8km quiet and relaxing stroll into the absolute middle of no where.
