I am going to be the cynical party pooper here -- I have absolutely no faith in today's Honda to deliver on anything that might closely resemble the PS job we see in the top post, and I won't belief a word Honda says until I see an actual product in the showroom.

Having said that, I would have to thoroughly disagree with Tone Loc's assessment on the sports car market. The FRS/BRZ has continued to prove itself as a market failure. In the US, sales for Subaru in the first 10 or 11 months this fiscal year has already exceed the total sales figure for Subie last year. Ever car in their line up experienced sales growth, except for the BRZ, which actually reported fewer sales. New FRS'es are also not selling well -- Toyota seems like it is only on pace to sell ~60% as many FRS as they did in 2013, which was their banner year.
Considering that the new Miata only came out in late summer, I'd say it is selling sufficiently well. Still, the sales number are no better than they were when the 3rd car came out -- I'd say the 3rd and 4th gen cars are only roughly selling at the same volume during their first model year, and the NA/NB sold in much higher numbers. We notice a lot of buzz on the ND Miata because we are car enthusiasts, and most informed enthusiasts are aware of the car's fantastic performance, and praising it as such.
As far as the S2k rendering goes, it should be super easy to see that the front end is a massaged version (lengthened and flattened) version of the NSX front end. The rendering looks nice because the hood is nice and low. The NSX can do this because it is a mid-engine car -- there is nothing in the front bonnet, so it is easy to meet those pedestrian crash standards that require a minimum empty gap between the hood sheet metal and the engine hard parts. If an S2k were to be made, as an FR car, there is no way it can retain such a low sleek hood.
Looking at the 2016 Civic, the CTR, S660 and the NSX, I also have no confidence in Honda's design team to create a beautiful looking car. Have you seen the a$$ end of a new 2016 Civic sedan? and all that overwrought lines and stuff all over the CTR and S660? How generic supercar the NSX looks?
Last but not least, to quote a friend who is very familiar with Honda products (and he is an old skool Honda fanbois as well), a car manufacturer doesn't step away from the sports car game for 10 years, and expect to come back as the top dog in their first sports car when they get back into the market.
I will say that should Honda decides to produce a new age S2k, it will feature a phenomenal engine -- as long as the engine only runs on gasoline.
everyone that wants a FRS/BRZ already has one...I wanna say they're quite common locally...I see may be half a dozen each day. They won't really move more units unless it gets refreshed or turbo'd but i doubt the latter will happen this gen.
Commercially it's not doing well but i dont think it's fair to compare a model that's starting to stagnate with the mazda which is brand new to the market.
But I agree...the odds are against this car for being more fun/better looking than the AP1/AP2...not getting my hopes up
It appears Honda might be moving forward with its baby NSX project.
Rumors and speculation surrounding the baby NSX has died down quite a bit, but these latest patent images will surely re-spark the discussion. Registered and fully published on July 17 by the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the patent application is specifically for the car’s interior, but we’re able to see the exterior design as well. The dash that was previously revealed in a July 2016 patent appears to be incorporated into the cabin.

The center console features similar design elements as the Acura NSX, although there are more knobs and dials seen in this particular example.
Honda has been rumored to be working on a successor to the S2000 for years now, and it’s been assumed the baby NSX will serve that role. Unfortunately, the Japanese automaker has stayed relatively quiet regarding the project, and we have yet to even see a concept confirming its in the works.

Would be nice if someone made a list of cars that actually increased in value with inflation taken into account. Unless it's from italy or america before 1980's i'd be shocked. No I dont mean one off sales either. Even the nur spec r34's are money losers at this point they may list to the moon but who is actually paying?

Finally Honda is making cars that people want to buy again. Guess they were losing sales to all the other manufacturers that were still making sports cars. If only mitsubishi didn't kill off the Evo

The patent was only for the video game. There's been no new information on a real-life version and most likely there won't be one.
Anyway, this front end is what the NSX should've been, no stupid beak.

if the new Civic-R is almost 50k...I doubt a new mid-engine platform would go for less than 6 figures
they should just make a LHD S660 priced at 22k and call it a day...it'll bleed the Miata/86 market real good
the s2k was 50k
the cr-z was the precursor to the s660 and that went nowhere

don't know...is there not much demand for sub $20k cars? Wikipedia says sub-compacts is the fastest growing segment this past decade..i think kei's would sell decently here but it does look like that market is saturated
