Minimum 3 years before you're allowed to ask for an update. If anything breaks before then, you'll have to just figure it out. Broken keys? Type around it. Maybe borrow an old machine from the lab.
At the 3 year mark, when you ask for that update, you're asked "but describe how your work is being affected by the lack of upgrade? ...no i don't agree with that one; what other justifications do you have?"
Though it's been a while since I've had any issues. Since we moved onto the Apple silicon MacBook Pros, it's been a rock-solid experience.

On this note: in the early days at my work, I requested a Microsoft Office license. It went to my director and he asked me why I need it. I said I need to work with spreadsheets. He promptly said "but the Numbers app comes for free on your MacBook, why can't you just use that?"
"But our vendors collaborate with us in .xls!!"
"Ok, so convert those into .numbers."
