CPUs are issued based on role types. A data entry clerk doesn't get the same CPU as compared to say a software developer. Directors+ usually get top-tier laptops.

I always found this hilariously stupid especially as I was a tech side Director+ so I'd get given the same gear that the devs would get but all I was doing was reading docs, building decks, responding to Slack messages, and editing spreadsheets. At my last role I was given a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro (32GB RAM, 1TB HD) no questions asked - it was such a colossal waste of money while the alternative at the time was a poverty grade MacBook Air (the wedge one) that the business folks had to use.

I think it's the old annual budget for IT hardware, if you don't use it, you lose it approach. I mean the only one here that needs the newest Macbook Pro for his work is prob Badhobz.

That, and some director/exec will throw a fit if he/she didn't get the best laptop option on offer (regardless of whether the specs make sense for the role or not).

I had a stint on the IT side and got to hear some stories along the way. The takeaway regarding hardware was to just give them a nice laptop and keep them away.

I don't mind cuz then I can pick up a decent used really good tech laptops from those places that refurbish them. I see them on FB periodically. Lenovo, IBM, etc. Not sure about Macbook but I'm sure they are out there. Or does Apple refurbish and resell?

I believe they do. You have to go into the depths of their website to find the refurbished units for sale.

There are other channels to buy refurbished units as well. Bauer Systems here in Ontario is a good example. I didn't buy an Apple product, but rather, found a really good deal on a refurbished Microsoft Surface with an i7 and 32GB RAM - exactly what I needed, and for a very competitive price. It pays to check out facebook market place late at night. 2 in the morning last night I was browsing facebook market place and a new listing for a sim rig and computer pops up. $1000 dollars for both. The ad is only minutes old. I send a message " I will take it whats the address" She reply's and we agree to meet at 9 AM. You want to meet these people early so one can snake you.

I get up grab some tools hit the bank machine and head over. Knock on the door no answer. Sent a message. Nothing. knock on the door again, nothing. Just as I am about to leave some lady in a bathrobe opens the door. She looks hung over. I show here the cash and she takes me inside. Everything looked brand fucking new. Hand her the cash and start talking things apart. She tells me it belonged to her husband but he cheated on her so she kicked him out and is selling his stuff.

Looking at everything it's about 8k worth of stuff. The computer has a 4090 and that's worth about 3k alone. I got most of it set up. Still got to mount the seat and adjust the pedals.

if ur looking at that list and don't know how to pick...

1) avoid any Thinkpad L or E series
2) avoid any intel CPUs below 12xx
3) for any thinkpads, assume they have the dimmest 1080P screen available

^I dunno, I think I5's are perfectly acceptable for general light duty (browsing, email, simple apps).

I bought a couple refurb T14's with I5-1145's, 16G ram and 256G for $500. I find them perfectly serviceable for general use. One lives in my garage so I can steam tunes to my stereo in there, or look up stuff when I need it while I'm working things.

The other is just kind of a floater inside the house when I want to surf on the couch or whatever. I used to use my work laptop all the time for this, but now I don't need to. They started locking so much shit down that it had become a pain.

11th gen is like fine....

Intel 5th to 10th gen = Early Subaru EJ25, left to stagnate w/ bad head gasket
11-13th = Later EJ25, basic variants fine but high performance sku blows up
Core 1xx/2xx = FA20, nothing special
Core 3xx = FA24, finally 'good' but still worse than competitors.

Apple is like BMW turbo 6s and ZF8, M1 Pro from 6 years ago is still better than Core 3xx.
AMD is like MB with their 400hp+ turbo 4s, their high end chips are stronger than Core 2xx and 3xx.

the lenovos are fine for home and indoor use but most corp specs have the worst 300 nit 1080p display

compare to 500-1000nit and 2.5k on macbook pros and surface

I have a docking stations with dual good 24" 1440p monitors both at home and at work. I rarely even open the lid to my Laptop lol.

I'm currently on a 2.5 year old Lenovo T16 with i7-1260p and 24GB of RAM.
It's been a pretty solid machine, my only gripe is that IT's crap such as antivirus, PAM, puts a noticeable drag on the machine. It idles around a constant 10% CPU usage.

Minimum 3 years before you're allowed to ask for an update. If anything breaks before then, you'll have to just figure it out. Broken keys? Type around it. Maybe borrow an old machine from the lab.

At the 3 year mark, when you ask for that update, you're asked "but describe how your work is being affected by the lack of upgrade? ...no i don't agree with that one; what other justifications do you have?"

Though it's been a while since I've had any issues. Since we moved onto the Apple silicon MacBook Pros, it's been a rock-solid experience.
