1.4 beats the 1.8 hands down in sharpness, build quality, bokeh and overall performance. It's worth the extra $200.
Now if you compare the 1.2 to the 1.4, that's not worth the price difference

^ on a mac use aperture, you can also use lightroom. Both very powerful tools to edit pics
