I hear ya, but I caved and bought an 11-28 cassette. I agree that the 2 weeks I rode the 11-25, that I could feel myself getting stronger and faster, but I needed a bailout gear. I have no plans on going back to a compact crank, in fact, I still try my best to climb with 39/25, but it's nice to have that one last gear when I'm gassed.

Someone on CL is selling Rapha Chamois Cream for $15 per tin.

Definitely the best scent out of all the one's i've used (assos, dznuts, generic, alchemy).

Reg price is $25++. One tin last me 1+ year.

It's a valid question.

I think the real answer is: It depends.

Some rear derailleur cages are meant for triple cranks and may not support double chain rings. I mean, it will work, but you'll have to mind where you are when shifting to prevent cross-chaining and the length of the chain etc.

More importantly, you'll have to factor in costs. Imagine your bike is only worth $200, and the crank itself is $200 (just food for thought.) That's when you have to ask yourself, "Is it worth it?" Lots of variables to consider. I'm missing more, but that's the gist of it.

I haven't really followed the hybrid scene for a while, but I can only imagine for something within that price range, the Giant Escape is not a bad buy. Also consider some Kona hybrids that are out there. I believe Sport Check might have some GT hybrids too.

I recall seeing a few Scott SUB30s and what not on Craigslist that were reasonable.

The short answer is yes, but why? Weight savings or ? Personally, I would keep the triple, if you ever find yourself on some really steep climbs. Or if you want, you could always just remove a chainring, set your limit screw on your derailleur, and voila, you got yourself a double. Or remove your big ring and stick on a bash guard. =P
If you want to do it all properly, then yeah, what BCRDukes said, you should consider costs. New front derailleur, new double shifter, possibly new chain (or remove some links).

Thanks for the input guys. Honestly the main reason is because I never use the granny ring and I don't feel like a true roadie with a triple.

It is an older bike, I love the thing, but you guys are right, I'll have to bear in mind with the costs. Perhaps I'll save that cash for a newer road bike one day lol.

^ good looking bike! What do you mean you never use the granny ring? Maybe you're not riding steep enough grades then! =) There are a number of road bikes with triple rings, and I wish I had triple on a couple of my bikes when I'm climbing SFU. The only bike I have a triple on, is my touring bike, which is pretty standard. And yeah, in no way does it feel like a road bike.
If you do love the bike and plan on keeping it around, then I would just continue riding it until your drive train wore out, and then swap in a double at that time. Why waste perfecting good working parts unless you're racing & trying to save some weight or you can sell it for some money, just my personal opinion. (Or buy a new road bike at that time, but I bet you'll want to keep this around for a back up or rainy day bike or whatever).

I think he was probably just zoned out. You could see his wheels locking up at the apex of the turn. But i guess even the best of brakes wont do much when you're going 60+ on 25cc tires.

Spent some time at my grandparents over the weekend and found my old "race bike" in the shop. A little more rusty, a little more beat up, but still with those nasty tri bars. I tossed her in the trunk and brought her back to vancouver with me.

She will get the full hipster meal deal. Stripped, and ill make my first single speed. I was also thinking about polishing up all the aluminum, and giving the frame a good spray. But at the same time, I don't exactly want it to look flashy as the whole point of bring it back was so I could have a bike to ride and lock up in the city.

EDIT: I think I have the two most ghetto bikes on Revscene haha. Love it. This beast may have been decent in it's day though. Made in Japan Chromoly frame (Araya?), Shimano drivetrain, Dia-compe brakes. Not too shabby
