I've been to Japan 3 times. It's like too sterile for me man. It's Asia with training wheels - nothing can go wrong everything is prepackaged and perfect for family consumption. China's big cities and major attractions are starting to look like that unfortunately.
Once Asians start to visit a place en masse it's done.

Well there goes $400 down the drain. At least I don't have to worry about denied boarding now.
On a side note, one could probably have seen this one coming. A lot of travel YTers suddenly all went to China the last few months. I'm guessing China tourism has been flagging and they are trying to boost it. Tourism in an economic sense is an export good, some of the bad will China has collected with their aggressive expansionist policies probably detered a lot of in Asia travelers and they need to fill in the gap.

For me that's a part of the appeal - I don't want complications or things to go wrong and I don't want language to be too big a barrier especially as I'm travelling with a kid nowadays.
I'll save the more adventurous stuff till she's a teen or when she's out of the house.
On a tangent, I was saying to my wife that now that I'm 50 that it's likely I'll have about 20 years left of healthy living left where big vacations are feasible which probably means only 20-30 trips left (at the top end). That's not a lot of trips when I think of places I want to visit/re-visit:
Japan (3-4 times)
Europe (5-6 times)
South America (1-2 times)
Australia/NZ (2-3 times)
SE Asia/Polynesian (2-3 times)
That doesn't include my bucket list stuff like going to an F1 race or LeMans or seeing other big sporting events

Considering over 80% of the global population has never been on a plane, the above statement is funny to read

My son has a friend in school who's from Japan. We had a playdate and asked the parents if they ever would have grandparents visit. The dad said, his mom doesn't even have her passport, never got one and has no interest leaving Japan ever.

Your own mortality really starts coming into perspective by the time you hit 40 and 50.
You begin to count the summers left, the trips and vacations that you can still enjoy from a physical aspect, it's quite eye opening, and a little jarring, isn't it?

Even more reason now to do challenging trips while you're young and 50 is still young! Japan will always be Japan, Europe will always be Europe. These places will stagnate as time goes on and become museum pieces. This is going to happen with most of East Asia and the West.

You listed like 17 once in a lifetime trips for most people
I don't know if that perspective helps with your feelings of mortality or not, but it stood out to me

Are they once in a lifetime though?
We've been to Japan 3 times already, going a 4th time in a few weeks. We are heading to Shanghai after that, 3rd time for me, but first time bringing the kids.
I've been to Europe twice, wife has been 3 times. Our last Europe trip imo WAS a once in a lifetime trip, doing a euro delivery with my M3. Been trying to do it again but it's a little hard with 2 kids.
We went to Australia for our honeymoon. It's pretty high on our list of places to revisit as it's safe imo to bring kids. I'm not as comfortable going say Vietnam with two young kids.

I've never been, if it's just the two of us fuck yeah we'd go. With two young kids I'd er on the side of caution. I'd have no problems going to Thailand or Malaysia though. I think I'd be much more comfortable if I've been and know what to expect.

I think the average Canadian couldn't afford to take 17 trips on the other side of the world over a decade, while obviously the average Revscener could

Traveling within North America honestly isn't all that cheaper unless you are talking about driving to Kelowna for a few days, and even then you are looking to spend a few grand between accommodations, food, and misc entrance and stuff. We don't have a ShenZhen to do cheap entertainment.

Unfortunately, this is arguably the weakest aspect of living a Canadian west coast life -- we don't have anywhere close or cheap that is easily within driving distance, so cheap travel is kind of out of the picture. Especially with the increased tensions with the US, road trips to the south have also become unfashionable and potentially troublesome.
With bcdukes and kryptonite being in Toronto, I'm sure they can relate -- there are literally tons of travel destinations that is within a 6-hours driving limit. Here, we have Victoria, Whistler, Kelowna / Okanaga, and Seattle.
