Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

It was a bizarre incident. Why did WS elect to slap CR instead of punch? If I was that pissed off at a male, my first reaction would be to punch, not slap. Maybe if I was doing that to a female, I would slap…

have you seen those slap competitions where ppl get KO'd?
open palm strikes are quite effective, and there's quite a size differential between the 2.
i'm impressed how chris took it. i'd take a few seconds even if i was on live TV to recover as well.
may not have been pretty but at least he kept the show/flow going to present the next one.

I'm thinking he slapped him as opposed to punching him simply due to optics. It's funny though, people don't realize how effective a palm strike is, most people throwing a punch to the face end up breaking their hands (even when properly trained).
I really hope Will's career suffers for this though, the guy is a nutcase. What bothers me the most is that he professes "black excellence", and yet he felt no pause to slap another black man on stage in front of millions of people. So which is it Will, are you about uplifting the black man, or are you not?
I guarantee you he would never have done that to a Ricky Gervais, or a Neil Patrick-Harris, not a chance.

Where is the visual of the apology? I think that his apology to Chris Rock and to Academy would look more sincere if he posted a video on IG and apologize to Rock.
Jim Carrey is right about Hollywood. He calls out Hollywood for being “spineless on mass” for applauding Smith after his Oscars acceptance speech.
