No I developed it from one raw file. The amount of detail you can recover from highlights and shadows from a d600 (and a d800 for that matter) is just ridiculous.

The D600 probably has the best dynamic range of any DSLR I've used. Both D600 & D800 cameras destroy the new Canons up to about 1600 ISO. I haven't tried the 6D yet, but some internet articles state that it is an improvement over the 5DmkIII.

I'm not normally one for "smoking art" but I decided to give it a try.
I'm not entirely pleased with the overall positioning of the shot, but for a spur of the moment click, I think it worked out alright.

Someone has to keep the fanboy train going. But seriously, I consider the D600 one of the best bargains in dSLR recent history. You find new ones for $1600!! Better than D3x quality in the smallest FF body ever.

You can use any lens, but faster, high quality lenses are good. Fast primes are good. For this shot I used 14-24mm which is good for stuff like this. I think a 50mm would work too. I think it's important to have lenses that have aspherical elements to combat coma at larger aperture. Shoot raw and process. Focused to infinity.

I read the rule of thumb for the longest shutter speed you should have for FF is 600/lens focal length. You would of course need to adjust for crop so Nikons would be 400/focal length. This is just a rule of thumb to start with and you would still need to check, but anything slower would result in trails.

So wide angle is probably best. That way you can gather the most light without risk of star trails. (if you want a static shot). Also, I think you can correct images with photoshop with a technique to 'unspin' the photo. But I've never tried it before.
