Shoot two different shots with a tripod. One with the stars in focus and one with the house in focus, then blend them together post-processing.
That's what I would do.. and yeah, if my camera has trouble auto-focusing then I just use manual.

Photomatrix Pro is the most commonly used HDR software.

If you or someone you know is a student, there's a DEEP discount for students. I picked it up in my last year at UBC, and it has been well worth it!

I use Oloneo Photoengine. It's faster than Photomatix at processing. I used to use Photomatix but I'm a n00b and get what I want quicker out of Photoengine.

I like the first two a lot, looks like Crescent Beach? On the last one, I find the visible flare to be really distracting.
