It hasn't been as cheap as I hoped, but I'm happier being 20k into my e36 than I ever was in my reliable new(ish) GTi. Don't buy a cheaper older sports car thinking it will ever be reliable LOL. Buy it because you love it, and reap the benefits if you don't mind paying for it. 400ish bucks a month on a lease for a new golf/jetta/civic or whatever or 400 bucks a month for mods/maintenance for my M3. Easy decision.
If it is in fact reliable, take it as a blessing.
