I can't remember who it was on RS (I think Infiniti?) who works at Statistics Canada in Ottawa.

Whoever you are - thank you for all the amazing work that you folks do.

The problem ..or one problem.. with kids sports is that it’s become an industry. For hockey there are camps , power skating , treadmill skating, off ice training etc . You don’t want to pay for it but when your kid gets left behind in a level from there friends it becomes a tough call for some peoples

Hockey isn’t even the worst. We are currently wrestling with the idea of letting g our daughter try out for competitive cheer. 4K in fees from September to May. Plus travel for meets. She’s currently in recreational cheer and wants to move up w her friends.

At least with Hockey there's that pipedream that they might go pro one day. Dumping thousands into cheer, I guess it'll keep them off getting into drugs?

Pilots confirmed dead. Sad day in the industry, and chilling ATC tapes. Another issue south of the border.

sad for the pilots but good for us ! that tiny little bitch ass jet is the bane of my existence. every time see my equipment has changed to that little piece of shit, i get PTSD.

1 less trashy pond skipper jet in the fleet is good news.

Everything isn’t connected to politics. The US has operated a bit like the Wild West for decades in the ATC world. But if you want too, you could add a little bit of that fault to the labour shortages they are seeing, but so are we.

They were heading to another incident. Vehicles and planes cross active runways all the time, the are generally given a couple miles clearance from the aircraft landing.

So what I've picked up in this situation:

- Air Traffic Controller was working alone
- Just prior to the incident, the ATC was dealing with another plane that declared an emergency, which is what the firetruck was dispatched to
- Air Canada plane given permission to land
- Fire Truck given permission to cross runway as plane was landing
- Was night time and rainy, so truck would not be able to see down the runway very well
- ATC realized the mistake, tried to call the truck to Stop but was too late.

I’d have to relisten to the tapes, but it would be very odd if the ground controller and the tower controller would be the same in LGA. It does happen in Canada since the covid shortage, but LGA… I can’t see it.

It’s normal to have a single ground controller. (Can’t have multiple speaking on one frequency). The ground area can be broken into multiple area (north south etc), with multiple frequencies.

I dunno what's more annoying whenever it comes to tragic events:
"Experts" that come out of the woodworks when in reality they're a baggage handler.
or
The ones that make this event about them with some bizarre connection (I flew to Laguardia 10 years ago as a passenger so here's my opinion!/my mom is a flight attendant!) in order to get likes and views.

I'm embarassed to admit that over the years I've watched a lot of those ATC close-call re-enactment videos on youtube. Whenever one of those "close call" videos comes up, anecdotally it feels like a lot of them are related to ATC controllers being overwhelmed or having to juggle too much. That's just my feeling though, I have no data or anything to support that.

My best guess on what happened at LGA is:

1) LGA seemed awfully busy that night
2) On late/overnight shifts, they reduce the number of controllers working in the tower, but given the volume, they may have been understaffed
3) Ground controller was juggling a LOT
4) He was clearly focused on trying to find a gate/airstairs for the United that declared an emergency because of a foul odor after aborting takeoff twice. That whole situation was a bit of a gong show.

But it also looks like the firefighters didn't follow procedure either.

The video shows the runway entrance lights were red when the truck was given clearance. You're not supposed to cross a red light, even if when given ATC clearance.

The truck didn't respond when the controller said stop, so maybe they weren't monitoring their radio?

ATC shortages been a problem whether democrat or republicans, they dont support funding . We have the same problem here in Canada with YVR being chronically short staffed. The nature of ATC training taking 2+ years with a high failure rate makes it difficult.

The unfortunate reality is that the American public and media will forget about this in about 2 news cycle and nothing will change. Only the pilots died who are "foreigners" and they'll make a scapegoat out of the controller and move on. Remember the plane hitting the helicopter in DC a year ago and people demanding change? Nothing changed.
