Shaw extreme internet speed drops when using wireless router?
ok i have shaw extreme and am supposed to get 15 MBPS. i ran speedtest and got only 8 MBPS whith my Dlink Di - 524 WiFi router wired to my PC.
when i pull the router and connect directly to the modem i hit 20+ MBPS
what gives?
the router shouldn't kill my internet that badly right?
edit: updated the firmware and i hit 10 MBPS now, still thats only 1/2 what i get without the router. maybe time for a newer model as this one is discontinued

Try turning off the encryption and see what you get.

usually when you are using a wireless connection you should see a drop of anywhere from 2mb-5mb depends on how good the wireless router is.
That being said I can only say I have exp with ADSL and not cable.
I would really suggest that if you need the speed keep your computer directly connected to the modem cause regardless you will lose speed when wireless

Take a look at your router settings and make sure that the speed throughput is set to "AUTO" for all ports.
Why would encryption be a concern? This is a wired connection.

Could it be as simple as your router is not capable of that kind of wireless speed?
If it is an older model, I wouldn't be surprised that it can't reach the speed it could wired.

WiFi is plug and play unless you want to put in a password what can be a WEP encryption among other things.
So no, you can just have an unsecure (any can access) wifi but it will still be there and shouldn't reduce speed unless you have a lot of leechers (which may be the case)
