i picked up a 4th gen nano it works in my car adapter but it doesnt allow it to charge it, i could do so with my first gen. Is there any sort of adapter that can upgrade my wire connector or something so it can charge my ipod in my car

What kind of car adapter are you using? While the physical connector has always been the same, the function of the connector pinouts may have changed. You'd probably have to go to the manufacturer for an updated cable for the newer unit.
