I find that if I load the game and start Online mode right away by pressing X, it will usually have problems connecting, ie Cloud servers not available, online saving disabled, etc.
However, if I load the story mode and start Online mode from the going through the START menu it will work.

I got online before the update but lost my character and progress. since the update i tried both of those and also reinstalled the new update. I freeze up after i get picked up at the airport
