I had a lot of Japanese food lately
Shimaya on Victoria and 39th
8.5/10
Had Chirashi-don and chopped scallop rolls
Wife had the sake fish soup and variety of rolls
Japanese run, these guys are always good. Fish is always of good quality
This is one of my main go-to for Japanese, but they are closed like Sunday- Tuesday and they were gone on vacation for a long time
Kazu Sushi on Hastings
7.5/10
Last time I went, it was better; it might have been an off day
Japanese run
Had Chirashi-don, had too much rice. The rolls and nigiri were both very good though
Had one if their appetizers, don't remember name, but it was octopus mixed with preserved vegetables mixed with wasabi. You spoon it on top of seaweed and eat it. It was very good, strong punch to the nose. Never had it before, really liked it
Still a solid choice, going to give it another chance
Shikisai in Richmond
9/10
Been going here since RS recommended it
Went through their menu changes, renovations, staff changes
Still Japanese run
They HAVE had off days, but yesterday it was really amazing
Their Teishoku (set meal) is a crazy good deal, on weekdays and weekends. The menu changes from weekday and weekend, and has changed a few times already (previously had choice of dessert, then different desserts, then no dessert for weekday)
$16 Teishoku is a freaking steal on weekdays, $19 for weekend is still a crazy deal (has more food, different variety)
This is pretty much my go-to Japanese place, but they have had off days
Overall, they range for me on a bad day 7/10 good day 9/10

Went to Nightingale last night. Review + lotsa pix on my blog. https://jaxandcs.com/2016/06/19/nightingale-restaurant/
8/10. would've been 9/10, but they got -1 for serving desserts in fucking mason jars.

flying pig
pea soup 6/10, nothing great
brussel sprouts 3/10, super super salty, do not get trust me
pulled pork poutine 9/10, cheese was baked and was the best poutine I have ever ate... legit....
lobster / prawn risotto 7/10, great but was a bit too wet for my liking, I prefer it to be gooey and sticky, felt like congee, I told the server working there that if they put cheese on the risotto and baked it, it would be perfect.... going to do that next time
wanted to try bone marrow cheesey bread ( where you lather the bread with bone marrow, basically fat on fat....) could of had a heart attack if I did that + poutine combo

Are you trying to run up the bill
There's also Chop in Richmond. It's relatively convenient as its only a few blocks from the end of the 91 freeway.

Huh...which location did you go to?
Except for the first time I had it 3 years ago at Yaletown which was amazing, every other time the poutine either had too soggy fries or came with too little gravy or too little cheese, and of course the portions were significantly smaller. Tried it at all locations hoping it would different.

When it's on the company, why the hell not?
Chop might be a good choice, but I don't know how fast their service is. I gotta be considerate how long lunch will take too since we go work after lolol.

They were really quick for dinner when I went. I would hope it's the same for lunch?? Don't know how busy it gets during the day though.

As odd as this sounds, the best Brussels sprouts I've had are at St Augustine's.
Consistently good. Generous with the shredded cheese (parm?)
And they don't skimp on the acid.
As for the marrow cheesey bread...
I couldn't taste the marrow.
Maybe the execution? Maybe the concept just sounds good on paper.
Regardless, not what I hopped for

That ship has sailed. I remember when I was in highschool, Ichiban in richmond had all you can eat uni. Now that complex is turning into a condo
Ordered 20, ate 19 and got extremely gross. No, I didn't puke. My friend finished the last one for me.

Actually, some of the absolute worst recommendations for me have come from Revscene because some of you have just horrible taste in food or you have absolutely no standards at all.

As Spoon said, go to a hk style cafe and go order a baked rice with extra cheese. I do it too. As someone who used to be a waiter/server one of the most annoying things is people bitching about how the food is made and how they want it to change exactly to their liking. News flash, they don't give a shit about shit that is not their control like menu items.
