goto the bently site and browse around too see if you like a soft or hard shell luggage (theres a section on what are benifits to both)
i recently bought an air Canada hard shell 28 inch luggage.
i love the hard shell and how it was 2 dividers inside. you should goto the Bentley store and see what you like. then go online to bestbuy and buy them there. bestbuy online always has crazy sales. Good luck. let us know what you end up buying. =D
if my grammar is bad. cause im hung over =-D
oh and i got it for $99 plus taxes. on sale from $149 plus taxes

Probably depends on your budget and how often you plan to use it.
To answer on a general level, your mainstream brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Travelpro, Heys will usually suffice for occasional travel. Even within those brands, they have different levels of quality between different lines.
If you travel frequently, you'll probably want to look into some of the higher end brands like Tumi, Briggs & Riley, Rimowa, etc that have better build quality and longer warranties.
Or of course, if you want to go all out, you can go with the China LV bag that yray mentioned. :P

Anything in the 26" range?
24" is barely bigger than carry on (which is usually 20-22").
28" is a bit on the larger size. What I've found is that you tend to overpack with larger suitcases, and you'll end up going over your 50lb limits. Underpack ,and your bag gets a little "poofy" with too much give and gets prone to cracking when the baggage agents throw your bags around or when they get crushed by other bags.

If $150 is your price range, just pick up whatever Hey's set Costco is currently selling.
Usually you get 2 or 3 cases for around $149-$199. Even less when its end of the season.
Personally, I use Rimowa's. But that might not be in everyone's price range / taste of tea.

I'd go for something light with a sidelock (so you can use this and a separate padlock if you want). A few months ago I picked up a Samsonite set from Costco.ca; they have some good deals on there website sometimes.

I've only went with samsonite. 1 reason, i need HARD CASE with NO zippers.
1) hard case = I can ensure my shit doesn't get broken that's key for me
2) i DO NOT like zippers because you can just push a pen and open the zippers, so the lock is pretty much useless.
just google, it's everywhere.

I'd buy a set from Costco, generally they only bring in quality stuff and if you ever have a problem their return policy is awesome.

I personality like soft case since I only pack clothing (expensive stuff should be with your carry on at all times) Also with hard shell you have to get a really tough shell other wise it might crack after 1 to 2 use (aluminum) is what I think higher grade hard shell use? But they are also $$$. The cheaper ones use plastic and can easily crack.
I like soft shell coz is lighter and also they tend to last longer than the cheapo hard shell (plastic ones). Also you can stuff a bit more than hard shell.
I only travel 2 to 3 times a year so soft shell is good enough for me.

i use a travelpro, but these days i pack pretty light i don't usually bring a full suitcase, just a duffle bag. anyway the travelpro is pretty well built. i can easily see it lasting a lifetime since i only take it with me maybe once a year.

This. I've used quite a few brands (both personally and helping people in/out of yvr). Nothing I've used compares to my Travelpro Maxlite. It moves effortlessly without any fuss. They're light (at 29" lighter than my outgoing 26) and have a simple rubber frame and big zippers that make them very robust.
Fortunately I picked up 2 when Best Buy was clearing them out, so I ended up paying only ~80 tax in each for them. Unbelievable deal.
It really has made going in/out of airports (for long trips) much easier to deal with.

I've been using the same Swiss Gear soft case twice a year, for about 4ish years, and it's in great shape still. I've traveled to numerous destinations in the USA and even once or twice to Asia and it's held up quite nicely.
I'm going away in the next two weeks and I will be using it once again.
