Basic 3rd party is $200K...which is worse. 2 million is likely the (practical) bare minimum.
Gerbs, this is insurance - for you know, unforeseen things happen. You will fuck yourself up for a loooong time if something happens. Better to save on other things than this...and like ^ said, if you can't afford it (and I say this without malice) you best take transit.

Last I heard, bankruptcy is not a very nice thing. If you can't afford the extra liability coverage, perhaps taking transit is a better bet.

Basic TPL is $200k, that does not go far by any means. Any dollar over $200k will be personally pursued from you privately ie. assets or garnished from your wages. Good luck working for someone else for the rest of your life, starting from your first job out of school.

i search (not sure if outdated) shows property dmg is capped at 20k, and i remember reading injuries has a new cap but can't find it, is that per claim or per person?
i assume everything over those will be pursued privately?
TPL not only covers the mishap you cause on other parties but also your passengers?

There's only a new cap on MINOR injuries, at $5500 per person involved (to my understanding). Anything that doesn't fall under minor, there's no cap.
There's no cap to property damage, but it all falls under liability insurance. I mean if you drive into a power pole, you're paying to repair that. Knocked out power to a factory because you drove into a pole, resulting in loss of work? You're on the hook for that as well.
From what I read, they pursue anything out of insurance through wage garnishes, etc.
TPL covers everybody involved in the accident other than you, including your own passengers.

holy shit
ICBC is applying to the B.C. Utilities Commission for a 20% decrease on basic and optional vehicle insurance as a result of ICBC's new enhanced care coverage. Customers can expect to save up to $400 by May 1, 2021.

I just renewed, went from ~221/mo to $215/mo and I moved from richmond to Ladner. Nothing else changed... thought it would be a bigger drop than that to be honest. Disappointed.

Ladner is still in the same ICBC rate territory as Richmond (Lower Mainland). Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows (which cuts southwest between Surrey and Langley to White Rock) is the next ICBC rate territory then Fraser Valley (Langley-Chilliwack) to the east.

I found this out when I had the M3 insured for the week. Richmond is actually one of the cheaper territories.. whereas Delta (North Delta) is more expensive than Richmond LOL wut

Richmond has terrible drivers but don't forget a lot of them are so scared they drive so slow = cheap accident repairs... just a lot of them

I call BS, every year icbc says they will be cheaper. Like the designated driver system that they just put in place. My insurance was higher than last year cuz they jacked up the base rate.

is there finally a chance that i'll be able to move a plate around different cars without visiting an agent?
i know ICBC will never create a workable fleet policy for enthusiasts - but this could be something.

Afaik we're the only province that doesn't have this. Like an umbrella policy that goes with the plates.
Why the fuck should I be paying 4 independent policies for 4 cars, if I'm the only driver? What a fucking joke.

Online renewals is good and bad.
For the average person, a simple renewal should be able to be done online. However I think alot of people don't give enough thought to the fact that those couple of pieces of paper in your glovebox are an incredibly complex legal document and the autoplan agent that guided you thru your policy has at least some idea of how it works.
If it was all online only, how many idiots would be buying absolute minimum liability policies and no optional coverages because all they look at is the price and then cry and moan they didn't understand when they get in an accident, or worse, get sued for more than their coverage.

I think this is a problem when there are several insurance companies. And one needs to be sure they are comparing apple to apple.
ICBC has a monopoly (for basic insurance at least) in the province, and the wordings can be simple enough. If they wanted someone to double check on something, they could always add another "verification" step so that they read a tl;dr version, which is the same version insurance broker would say anyway.
It's time for ICBC to move digital. My f&f down south can't believe I still have to go into a branch to get insurance. For them it's a call away.

Not sure why you’re assuming it’s switching to an *online only* system. We just want the option to do some simple stuff online

Like renew insurance with the same coverage. Should only have to go in if changing coverage or insuring a new/different vehicle.

^^ this. As I don't think I've changed my policy for like 5 years. Unless icbc forces some change. It's not like you will jump between liabilities every year. I really want to have some sort of fleet policy so I can afford to insure all my cars at once

Self-serve TOP's would be fantastic. Half the time it takes longer to go get the TOP than it does taking the car wherever it's going.

I’m hoping the online portal will be able to do day permits
Hate having to insure my truck to drive it twice a month due to the inconvenience of having to go in and get a day permit..
