Has anyone heard about the Alberta loop hole for international travel?

Someone was telling me that folks are flying into Alberta, and back to BC in order to skirt 2 week quarantine rules?

Is this actually happening? I thought you'd be flagged when returning from an international flight regardless of province?

I think it's that Alberta only requires a 2 day quarantine or something, so ppl fly back into AB and either spend two days in Alberta or quarantine in BC, something like that

Blame it on AB govt

^or, you know, you could blame it on the people abusing these loopholes.

Is this Trudeau's version of bringing the hammer down to control the spread of Covid?

What are your thoughts on these new measures that Trudeau announced this morning?

https://globalnews.ca/news/7607191/c...-restrictions/

He said that Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing, and Air Transat have all agreed to cancel air services to “all Caribbean destinations and Mexico,” starting Sunday. The cancellations will continue until April 30, Trudeau added.

On top of flight cancellations, beginning next week, all international flights will only be allowed to land at four airports; those in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary.

They will be making arrangements with their customers who are currently on a trip in these regions to organize their return flights,” he said.

Trudeau also announced a new mandatory PCR testing requirement at airports for people returning to Canada. He said that while these travellers wait for this COVID-19 test result, they’ll be forced to quarantine for up to three days at a designated hotel – on their own dime.

Trudeau added that this “expected to be more than $2000.”

“Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement,” Trudeau said.

“Those with positive tests will be immediately required to quarantine in designated government facilities to make sure they’re not carrying variants of potential concern.”

The Yankees still need to show proof of a negative result from a PCR test at all land border crossings:

In addition to the measures announced Friday, Trudeau said all non-essential travellers will also have to show proof of a negative PCR test at the Canada-U.S. land border.

“And we’re working to stand up additional testing requirements for land travel,” the prime minister added.

Data is out and J&J's one-shot vaccine has 66% efficacy - which, although not as high as the mRNA ones, is an order of magnitude easier to handle and distribute. Plus at 66% it's still about as high as your annual Flu vaccine. Plus they'll be exploring results of a two-shot regimen which will likely bump up the efficacy rate.

I'd say give this to everyone under 65 to help drive down transmission. We need to get rolling on this IMO

Crazy that Sweden and Germany are above Canada, considering the death rates.

I think it speaks volumes to see so many people online giving Trudeau backlash for the $2000 cost for mandatory quarantine and testing.

The entire point is to make it expensive to deter people from doing non-essential travel!

Dr. Henry's Covid briefing for today:

514 new cases
66,179 total cases
5 deaths

74 people in ICU

Vaccine updates: Moderna vaccine supply is reduced by 20 percent for next week in BC due to difficulties at Moderna's processing plant.

My goodness. Dr. Henry was trying it hard to hold it together during today's briefing. Her voice was wavering throughout her update. She looked like she wanted to cry. You can hear the grief and stress in her voice.

The lack of procurement of vaccines by the government. Just gonna turn into “yea well this Johnson and Johnson knock off from China is 42% effective so just stick it in your arm and shut up cause that’s the best we got”

You also have a bunch of idiots who sent the doc death threats last year.

I can't imagine working a job that involves 1) difficult work to protect the public against a nasty super virus, 2) stressful work because you are under media and public scrutiny and 3) a bunch of Covidiots who threaten your life.

It is no wonder that sometimes you hear Dr. Henry asking British Columbians to be "kind and compassionate" to each other during her Covid briefings.

It is a tough job, that's for sure! Looking over your shoulder because a bunch of idiots want to kill you.

-article from September 2020:

VANCOUVER -- The death threats against B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry prompted a police response, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Henry discussed the threats while addressing the Union of B.C. Municipalities on Tuesday, as well as the abusive messages and phone calls her office has received during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We become a target," Henry said. "I've had to have security in my house. I've had death threats."
