I don't live on an island.. And yeah it's not great politically to say the least. But I don't have to step over crackheads when I go out, or worry about getting robbed or randomly stabbed. So there's that I guess

The key to living in places like Nanaimo, Duncan, is to live in the outer rural areas.
I'd totally live in Cowichan Bay. So you might have to drive 20 minutes to Duncan for major services, big deal. You get to come home to a view like this:  and have hundreds of feet of separation between you and your neighbors

Went for a ride because this listing seemed to cheap. 1.3 mill for a house with beach access. The location is amazing you can hear the ocean from the street. The downside is no garage so you park on the street and have to walk down a bunch of stairs like 20. In the winter you would have problems.

if there were good employment opportunities on the island then im sure a lot of people wouldn't mind moving there. The problem is unless you got a cushy government job in victoria, then youre kinda shit outta luck. Who's a big employer in Nanaimo? besides BC ferries?
They had an opening for a terminal manager in nanaimo, i think it took them 6 months to a year to finally fill it.
^fuck 1.3 for a water view thats right on the ocean... my god.

Your dollar can go a long way in Nanaimo for sure, and the views can be beautiful. But you can’t stay in your house forever. I’ve literally left Woodgrove Centre just minutes after entering because I didn’t want my kids to be around some of the people there. Maybe it was just a bad day to be there but none of us felt comfortable. Wannabe gangsters everywhere talking shit and dressed like they grew up in the CPT 
I’ve entertained moving to the island and have my company’s blessing to do so since I WFH. One day I might do it.. but I don’t think I’d land in Nanaimo. I do agree there are nice neighborhoods but ya.. similar to my experiences in Florida, drive a few minutes away and you’re in a completely different atmosphere.

Real estate is just a factor if a place is livable or not. Something to do is also a factor. After a week away, I'm happy to come back to my shoebox in cracktown then at least having a concert to go to or a restaurant to eat at.
Truth is it's all jokes, everywhere's a shithole for different reasons.

We spent a few years in Edmonton when we first arrived in Canada. It’s actually where those catholic nuns beat the English into me.
It wasn’t that bad of a place to grow up. Quite wholesome. I liked west Edmonton mall a lot when I was a kid and we played a shit load of hockey. Revisiting nowadays it’s kind of a dump but for younger families it’s not all that bad. Geographically it’s pretty boring but it’s kinda like everywhere in the prairies.

Calgary doesn't have an ocean either.
Where are you going to see a concert in naniamo, where are you going to go eat, where are you going to go snowboarding? There is fuck all to do involving socialization there, which is why people sit in their oceanfront homes watching 45 minute videos about tiktok clips.

I feel like we already beat this horse to death in the real estate thread several months ago. If you're a socialite who needs "big city amenities" a place like that is not for you.
If you like space and outdoor recreation, it's probably going to work a lot better.
As I get older I'm hermitizing. I just want acreage to fuck around on (garden, build things etc) a plethora of nearby camping and lakes etc, and a free public boat launch on the ocean within a short drive. I personally could go the rest of my life without going to another concert, sporting event, and have only the pick of chain restaurants to choose from, and I would not feel like I'm missing out on anything.
Got the boat in the water last weekend, got some fresh prawns
