Macaroon is just as idiotic as most political leaders. Look what happened with this whole push back retirement age thing. In FRANCE of all places.... the most liberal, left leaning, socialist country in the world.... YOURE NUTS.
France is such a weird place. How can you literally have like 1/4 the year off for vacations and still get anything done. Most French citizens get like 6-10 weeks off a year on top of their statutory holidays.

Macron is not wrong to try pushing back the retirement age -- I recall that a vast majority of the French realize that the state pension fund becoming insolvent is an inevitability if some sort of reform isn't implemented. But here is the real kicker -- Macron was dumb to force the reforms through despite massive public resistance, and the French public were also dumb to refuse the reforms despite knowing it needs to be reformed.
France's average life expectancy is 82 years old. Their previous retirement age is 62, and many people regularly work beyond that age anyway for one reason or another. It was already obvious to everyone that the State does not have enough money to fund the state pension.
So you know things are not going to work anymore. The boss proposes some mild changes to "fix" (more like mitigate or delay) the problem, and you refuse those changes. What gives?! 
This goes back to people being non-sensible. I would never rule out a miracle or some sort of White Knight swooping in to save the day, but I would not rely on those happening either.

I have the upmost respect for them as a people when it comes to holding their government to the fire, and accountability.
We here in Canada are pathetic in that regard.

In terms of raising retirement age, he's right, 62 is quite low. Things had to change for solvency reasons.
I wouldn't be surprised if we raise retirement age to 70 in Canada within the next few decades.

I agree that the French have the correct mentality in holding their government to the fire -- part of their protest is about how Macron had forced the reforms through despite massive pushback from the citizens. And I don't blame them for protesting about this at all.
And you are absolutely correct that we (Canadians) are absolutely pathetic in holding our government accountable.

I totally agree, but this is the FRENCH we are talking about. the same wack jobs who have rules that you cannot legally eat at your desk for lunch. No friggin way they would let him push something like this through. They go on strike at the drop of a hat.

I don't blame the protests but I think this is one of those cases where this is good, if painful, policy that needed to happen. Kudos to Macron for pushing this through despite what it might mean for his future as a politician.
I remember when the GST showed up way back in the 80's when the Mulroney gov't implemented it and there were howls of protests around it but it was a necessary change in taxation. Same with the carbon tax - it's one of the better taxes we have.
OTOH, we have local politicians who are too chicken shit to mass rezone our cities to make housing affordable and who are hollowing out our city centers as a result.

The financial numbers are on Macron's side, so I do not understand why he didn't try to keeping pushing those numbers on the French public until the numbers drill through their thick skulls. Maybe he just got fed up?
Force-feeding it through their legislative process upsets a lot of people, and it'd give the public the ammo they need to oppose the policy as a matter of violating democratic procedure. And then it makes it hard to govern, which is exactly what is happening now, and I'd say the outcome right now is not good either.
Using our own example, BC should have stuck with the switch to HST. But nope -- our voters are too stupid and pissed off to know what's good for them, and our politicians are too chicken shxt to make a stand for what's good.
