It's a nice area. My wife's uncle has a beach house in a gated community in Qualicum Beach that we visited 2 years ago, which was a nice getaway.
Because of all the oyster farms there, the spores wash up to the surrounding beaches. So many oysters off the private beach right out of the water while standing in the ocean.

I can't believe i've never been there before.

maybe i have a different idea of tide pools having been to port renfrew in the past, but which beaches in parksville have tide pools? i don't recall seeing sand dollars either on beaches there

No kidding. The older I get, the more I realize you have to experience life a long the way. Our vacation expenses have definitely ticket up in the past couple of years though. We're looking at Disneyland, but it's so expensive. A three night trip to Disneyland costs more than a seven night all inclusive in Mexico.
From my calculations, we're on track for retirement in 20 years... It would be nicer to retire earlier, but I've realized you shouldn't compromise too much along the way.

Ok, my dumbass just looked up what a tide pool is... My bad. What i'm thinking of was not that.
We were right on Parksville beach. and when the tide went out there were tons of areas with pockets of water. I guess this is not the same thing as a tide pool. There were tons of crabs all over the beach though (small ones) and sand dollars were around.

Hong Kong was cool when we visited for a friends wedding, but i'm not sure how it would be with kids... It was just a crazy big city vibe. I also thought Hong Kong would be cheaper too, it wasn't cheap at all.
Also, the flight with our kids would be rough and I couldn't afford business class for all of us.

Hong Kong prices make us all poor, and that's what even Badhobz said himself. And he's the biggest baller here!

Honestly for local summer trips, Washington or Oregon isn't even worth considering anymore IMHO. You're better off hitting the island or the Okanagan.
We just came back from Seattle for the Chris Brown concert and fuck, with the exchange rate and the price increases on everything, it's insane. You're adding 25%+ on top of already above Vancouver/BC prices.
Stupid example -- I love donuts, even hitting up a donut shop in Seattle ended up costing me $16 for 2 donuts. With the exchange rate that's effectively $8 per donut, when already the highest prices donuts in Vancouver are around $3.50-$4. It's a small example, but the same applies for eating out, drinks, etc.
What's the point in visiting a climate/topography almost exactly like BC, but for 25% more in costs? Pointless.

best to save money is to stay at home and hide underneath blankets. Make sure you also don't do any boning. Otherwise, you'll lose all the savings with these hellspawns.

i havent had those VLT drinks in so long. A few weeks ago some of us were going biking so i bought a 6 pack of those and also the chrysanthemum tea juiceboxes in my cooler for after the ride like a good asian. when we had them we all agreed that the paper straws absolutely ruin the whole experience. you get tons of air mixed with the juice now and the straw barely pierces the top. 1/10 would not buy again.

You're suppose to use the straw to just poke the hole and then squeeze bomb that stuff into your gaping maw man! Shotgun that lemon tea

The thing is, she didn't know about phoenix rolls when we first started dating. I brought her into the HK lifestyle of lemon tea and phoenix rolls and she loves it. She ate the phoenix rolls and even she said it tasted off.

On the flip side imagine being an American
Even “middle class” Americans can ball the fuck out in Canada, Japan, Europe, etc. their dollar is cruising.
Watched a guy recently in Tokyo, everything is fucking dirt cheap VS USD, $1 beers, $4 ramen, etc. it’s crazy

Fuck me, I'm headed to the East Coast US next month. Can the Fed cut rates so we get at least some relief FFS?
And wife's giving me snark for looking at discounted opaque bidding hotels on hotwire.com and for BOGO deals on Broadway shows.
These prices aren't in Canadian Pesos woman!!

I just looked up pricing. $6k for business class YVR to Hong Kong.
Got damn... I couldn't justify that. I feel like my stock portfolio would have to be at least $1M to justify that cost, so I still have a ways to go.

I had the exact opposite experience. I just did a roadtrip, graciously planned by Skunkworks, to East/South WA state (Kettle Falls -> Yakima) and OR (up to Bridgeside).
Aside from Red Lobster, which was a horrible mistake, every other food establishment we went to were small family owned resturants or (the only) diner in town. The portions were HUGE and even when taking exchange rate into consideration, it's still cheaper than local options. (ie. US $4.95/taco) Shockingly, again aside from Red Lobster (good thing they're going out of business), all the small town food was delicious and all Mexican food LOL. This is a stark contrast from the small town food I've tried in the Okanagan/Kootneys.
I agree that Seattle isn't worth it, but exploring WA/OR state is easily one of the best road trip experiences I've had.
