After U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs rattled the economy, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says the United Sates will likely meet Canada and Mexico “in the middle” with an announcement coming as soon as Wednesday.
Lutnick told Fox Business News that he has been on the phone with Canadian and Mexican officials after Trump on Tuesday imposed 25% tariffs on the countries, including 10% import taxes on Canada’s energy products such as oil and electricity.
Lutnick said the tariffs would not be paused but that Trump would reach a compromise.
“I think he’s going to figure out, you do more and I’ll meet you in the middle in some way,” Lutnick said. “We’re going to probably be announcing that tomorrow.”

Anyone care to enlighten me on the point of retaliation of tariffs? Other than telling them that they can’t fuck with us and that we won’t bend over for them? What is the point of them? It feels like a “if you can’t beat them, join them” thing and not a real solution or that we’re scooping down to their level. What do we get out of it other than increased prices of American goods and possibly more demand for Canadian goods?

You just answered your own question. The things I've highlighted in your post are not trivial, as much as you try to make it sound.
This is why they call it a trade war. As with any war, if the aggressor comes at you, think about how idiotic your statement would be:

Objectively speaking, retaliatory tariffs doesn't make economic sense, we Canadians will feel it because we will pay more for the things that are coming in with additional tariffs but it is more the, 'we are not bending over and eff you' statement.
Because there was such a long time of signalling this, it appears that the Premiers and Feds had some time to be specific on what to tariff to hurt Trump's base, so unlike Trump who is putting tariffs on anything and everything, Canadian tariffs are strategically focused.

I was watching this video today, basically they want to tank the market to force the feds to cut rates cuz inflation will be down and job market weakening. This is because they have like 7 trillion of gov debt that they have to refinance this year and they want it to do it at a lower rate. Then when rates drop the market goes back up and he can congratulate himself on saving the stock market, getting the feds to lower rates, poor people able to afford things by bringing inflation down.

It's possible he just didn't understand Trade Wars, and asked for an explanation/enlightenment. He didn't fight with anyone after, so it seems he has accepted the explanation. That is a good thing!
Hondaracer would never do that. His thought process (if you can call it that) is: If Trudeau did something, then it was bad and wrong
