This is a conversation that I heard last week from two employees in a federal government office. -To give you some background, I don't work with these two staff. They work for a different government program from the one that I work in.
Two white ladies. I'll call one of the ladies "Karen."
Karen: My husband and I are gonna go on holidays next week. We're going to visit his family in the States. We're kind of worried. His family is in Wisconsin. Milwaukee.
Second white lady: What is there to worry about? Are there protests happening in Milwaukee?
Karen: We're concerned that some of the protests against ICE agents harassing immigrants could get violent. My husband found out that there are plenty of blacks and Latinos who live in the downtown area of Milwaukee. Those people can get violent, you know.
Second white lady: Oh, I see. Hmm. Maybe it's better to stay away from the downtown area. What is there to see in downtown Milwaukee anyway?
Both ladies laugh.
I'm sitting in my desk right behind the Karen and second white lady. Rolling my eyes. They don't see me. I'm thinking to myself: "Lady, you don't really know what's happening in the U.S. It's the heavy handed tactics from the ICE agents which is inciting all these violent protests across the U.S. Stop putting the blame on minorities!"
I do agree on their last comments about Milwaukee.
Is there anything worthwhile to see in downtown Milwaukee??

I understand why people (ie. not just kids) no longer watch the news, and prefers to get them from their social media feed instead. What I don't understand is -- why would people consider social media / influencers etc. to be authoratative sources of information?
At best, it is no better than hearsay or gossip. At worse, when many of these sources (eg. Rebel News, Canada Proud) have been repeatedly caught / proven to relay fake news or otherwise incite hateful rhetoric, people should know better than to view these as reliable sources of information.

I'd argue that it's not the kids who don't watch the news it's the grown ups who don't. It's not the kids that I find misinformed but the older generation - they're far more gullible and easy to fool than young people. The middle age generation (folks in my realm) don't have the time to consume the news anymore - they're tied up with the kids, overworked, and/or looking after the parents.
It's the kids who are the most informed (in general) - sure, there are the disenchanted young white males but the youths (under 30) crowd are more informed than ever IMO. Their news may come from social media but they know how to discern fake news better than grown ups do.
At worse, when many of these sources (eg. Rebel News, Canada Proud, CBC, CTV, and Global) have been repeatedly caught / proven to relay fake news or otherwise incite hateful rhetoric, people should know better than to view these as reliable sources of information.

Having political leanings is different than presenting fake news, so it's important to not get the 2 mixed up.
Not confusing factual reporting with opinion pieces falls along the same lines.

The CBC does such a disservice to Canadians, it is pure establishment slop propaganda 100% with the goal being to keep the brainless 9-5 lemmings in line. I guess if all your motivation in life is to get rich, then the CBC is probably a great thing in your eyes.
