When I got my Supra I got a front and rear dashcam installed, I got it put in its own power supply (big battery) isolated from the cars electrical system for the drainage issue reason. Worked like a charm, never had any problems.
The camera systems battery charged when the car was on and that was the only way it was connected.

I have dual channel and it doesn't kill my battery life, you just need to set the voltage cutoff correctly.
I go with 12.8v, maybe I get less parking footage but better for my battery.

I have a thinkware one (the cheapest one) that’s hardwired to the fusebox. No issues on the ratrolla or the RXs. It automatically cuts off when voltage is below 12.6

I ran a dual with parking mode on my old Mazda for about 7 years, wife's Acura for about 5, and a dual on my Toyota for 3 now none of the cars have had any issues they were all set with voltage cutoffs. P.S. I did not do this myself had them all installed from Blackbox.
I should also note I didn't spend any money to buy the battery kit. We just used the cameras standard hardwiring kit which has built-in timer and voltage monitoring for Parking Mode. We use Blackvue cameras.

Essentially, you're pulling power from a separate battery than the cars.

I would be more comfortable hardwiring my dashcam had I purchased my battery from COSTCO instead of Cambodian Tire.

I keep cutoff on the highest voltage 12.4? 12.6? I've also over the years gathered enough jump starters to keep 1 in each car. Size of the battery definitely makes a difference..... But parking mode definitely shortens battery life. Take RSX for example. No dashcam and battery lasts 7-8 years. Honda Fit with parking mode and I'm changing the battery every 18 months, but many times, it'll need jump starts.. CCA on the Fit is something like 350, but Canadian Tire won't warranty it unless CCA tests at less than 300, so I'd be testing at about 320cca, having to jump the car once in a while until it finally drops to 300 and I can warranty it. Mid 2000 Benz ML, that thing has a massive battery, but I still had to warranty that thing, but only once during the warranty period.
It's not so bad when I know I have a jumper, because it's only a minor inconvenience to jump it. What sucks is wasting hours for Canadian Tire to run their test and some times they won't even let me warranty it yet, so I just keep using it and keep jumping until CCA drops more.
Those dashcam battery packs are pretty expensive, but if you value having a higher chance of starting your car every time, then the battery pack might be worth it to you.
I don't go the battery pack route because I get 2-3 batteries for every $200-300 I spend.

I just bought a power bank from Amazon and plugged the power bank into a switched ac socket in the car.
When car is off, dash cam draws from power bank, when car is on, power bank charges.

Thanks for this. My Group 35 Canadian Tire battery, I think was purchased some time in 2022 and it has a 4 year warranty until 2026 (Asian bad luck!) It's 640CCA at -18c and 785CCA at 0 degrees. Our factory/original battery died in the winter of '22 when it was something like -25c with the windchill with a much lower rating, so not bad for a wimpy factory battery. I think we also had a record snowfall.
I'll probably play it safe (for now) and run it via cigarette lighter adapter and hardwire it later on. I'll test the battery with a tester this week to see how it is and make a decision then.

I have a hardwired dashcam battery pack. It actually only lasts 13-15 hours so if you don't drive your car every day it doesn't actually have 24 hour surveillance. Also, it was quite expensive at ~$500

It's okay if it's garage parked though, when you go out it's enough juice to last while parked at work/at the grocery store/restaurant etc.

the ferrari bitch has been MIA for a month. Not sure what happened. She didnt even say she was travelling. Every time i didn't show up she would ask me if i got nabbed by the CCP.... so maybe her fears finally came true and she got detained by the motherland's secret police.
