There's a new ice grip standard in additional to the 3 peak snow rating and Bridgestone has a new Blizzak out that meets the standard:
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a7...-tire-details/
Quote:
This more human-readable name has some meaning behind it. Like all winter tires, the IcePeak meets the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) standard, which tests snow acceleration against a standard tire. The rubber industry came up with a new certification called "ice grip" in 2021 that tests braking performance on ice. The IcePeak is the first Bridgestone tire to meet both standards, hence its non-alphanumeric name, and it has those respective symbols stamped on the sidewall.
Would the DM-V2 and WS90 have passed the ice-grip test? Probably, a Bridgestone rep told us, but the company hasn't done the testing to find out. Both tires were released before the ice-grip standard was a thing, and it wasn't worth the expense to go through the recertification process or update all of the many molds to include the icon, so they waited for the new tire.
Aside from the additional badge of honor, the IcePeaks are an improvement over what they replace, maintaining a competitive edge. Bridgestone testing shows they're comparable to Nokian's Hakkapeliitta R5 winter tire, while they're as good as or better than the WS90 across the board—the biggest leap is a claimed 23 percent improvement in acceleration performance.
|
I bet most current full winters already meet this standard.

That wet rating for the X-ICE... That confirms my experience with my old set. They are really not a good choice for 90% of the lower mainland and the Island's winter conditions.... Wet.

I have a truly stupid question:
I forgot to add TPMS sensors for the pre-installed tire/rim package I bought from Quattro Tires, which I got for my '17 Highlander last year.
The vehicle definitely has a TPMS system because this winter I've had the light turn on twice. Each time, I topped up the tire pressures, and reset the light with the TPMS reset button I found under the dash.
Figured maybe I have an indirect TPMS system that just monitors wheel speed... but every search I do on the '17 Highlander shows that it's a direct system with sensors required in each wheel?
How do I figure this out? Lol

It could be that you're parked close enough to your original wheels/tires that it tricks it thinking it's on there. This happened to my Corolla where if I park close enough to the garage door, the car picks up the TPMS from the summer wheels. I don't have TPMS on my winter wheels. If I drive long enough, the TPMS system starts flashing.

That's hilarious, I guess that makes sense.
I've gone on 45 minute drives, parked a few hours, and driven 45 minutes back, with no error light though. Is that what you're seeing too, that the system truly doesn't care the sensors are absent for such extended periods?

At least my system doesn't care that the sensors are absent for an extended period. But remember, my car is ghetto. It's from 2017 and it's not very sophisticated. It freaks out if it doesn't detect the TPMS after, I want to say, 30 minutes or so? I don't recall which model year your Toyota is, but my wild ass scientific guess is that our systems are similar.
I've got the summer wheels tucked behind my spare set of Boxster track wheels and behind the Boxster itself, so there's a layer upon layer blocking the RF signal to the Corolla this season. My TPMS light has been on all winter but I do check my tire pressures on a weekly basis to make sure all is well.

Yeah, mine's a 2017 too so it's likely the same system.

What? I thought your Highlander was from 2023. Why would you buy such a ghetto car? Shame on you! (I am disappoint!)

Glad you asked.
1) Because these are one of my all-time favorite tail lights!
2) Because it's a crazy good value: did you know that a Highlander Hybrid Limited costs $73k? I paid exactly 50% of that. Had reasonably low kms, just barely still eligible for CPO, as well as a factory 3-year extended warranty I haggled down.
3) Had absolutely everything I wanted:
-3 rows
-leather seats (easy cleanups)
-panoramic sunroof
-360 degree camera
-openable trunk hatch window
-Class 3 hitch w/ 3500lb towing capacity
-even just enough OEM steer/drive-by-wire hooks that I could install a Comma.AI device and have hands-free self-driving
4) Legendary* fuel efficiency, on paper: 8.1 L/100km for an enormous SUV for a 2GR @ 306 hp (+ electric torque fill!!)
*this turned out to be a lie. i actually get 14 L/100km. every day i just pray for a CEL so i can get the warranty to fix whatever the hell is wrong with this piece of junk hybrid system.

Oh that's right. Your is a lemon. Are you ever going to find out what's wrong? Or will you just let it live it's glory is a living example of Toyota's unreliability?
Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my Corolla. It's living up to everything on paper and is reliable. Someone, sell me a broken Aston Martin.

I assume it varies between makes, but my 07 Grand Cherokee wouldn't say anything about the missing sensors until you had been driving for 15 minutes. Annoyingly my commute at the time was about 17 minutes so I'd get one loud beep each way.

Hmmm. Any chance that weathernetwork.com is wrong about the weather forecast for next week?
https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en...couver/14-days
Chance of snow for next Thursday, and also overnight for next Friday.
I am glad that I have not changed my tires back to all seasons yet haha.
