I think it's better to get an enclosure/dock and buy ur own HD instead of getting one of those packages

I used to use an external enclosure for my hard drive now I just use a NAS. Plugged it into my network so now i don't need to keep both computers on.
Now if I can only figure out how to get the FTP working. Stupid Telus blocked port 21.

Enclosure + HD is good since it covers the HD and prevents it from catching dust.

Go to www.redflagdeals.com and watch for deals. I would not buy a separate case and a HD because that will end up costing more and you will have to deal with 2 companies.

I have teh Akasa 2.5" Integral P2NES. It's the most flexible enclosure IMO. It supports both IDE/SATA via connecting of either eSATA or USB2.0.
Best bang for the buck..but it's kind of long looking.
I stuck a Fujitsu 320GB in there

read the reviews on futureshop about external drives and alot of them die just over 1yr of usage. I am afraid to pick one now.
Anyone has a reliable company in mind?? I thought about LaCie FA porche or the newer shiny black LaCie 500GB one.

Sorry, but I'll have to definitely disagree with you on this one. While the point you made may be true, I don't think you'll generally have both components go bad on you, so most likely you'll still be just dealing with one company, whether for the hard drive or the enclosure.
Another thing is external hard drives generally only have a one year warranty, whereas if you buy an OEM hard drive, you'll have at least a three year warranty (or five years for Seagates).
Generally you can get a hard drive and enclosure separately for cheaper than a prebuilt unit as well.

I bought a 250GB on boxing day at FS like 3 years ago, I can't remember the brand name but it's one I hadnt heard of before, really nice brushed aluminum I think. It's on all the time and I used to torrent directly to/from it, never had an issue.

A dock is much more easier to fix than a HDD. Period. If you know a bit about electronics, fixing the dock after the warranty runs out is not hard at all. Speaking from experience.
I would rather buy a dock and then choose a reliable HDD manufacturer. Like Seagate or Western Digital. Besides, it'll be convenient to just pop out the HDD from the dock for whatever reason down the road.

shouldnt the electronics in a dock be more or less the same as inside an external HDD?

Yeah, essentially.
I guess it all boils down to the situation. For the more tech savvy, the dock would make more sense as opposed to someone who just wants to store their stuff and call it a day. For me, I would buy the dock and then choose my own HDD. For the OP, I guess getting a MyBook or something rather wouldn't be a bad idea. I've had one HDD die on me just recently after 5 years of use and the only time it was off was when the neighborhood lost power.
