Exhaust welds
Hey
i got a question for welders, exhaust techs, etc...
ive noticed some rusting on my exhaust where two pieces were welded together. i am wondering if there is some sort of a sealer i should put on just in case the rust eats through the welds. i havent sanded it down so it could be just surface rust, if it is, is there a product out there take can clean it up and prevent further build up (to an extent).
I checked out can tire and they have some "rust check" product. Anyone use that before?

There isnt anything that will prevent it if there, it only slows it down. You need to get off as much as you can and use a product that can with stand the heat of your exhaust. I would recommend Por-15 but i dont know if you can buy it locally or if it will stand up to the heat.

Dissimilar metals will cause corrosion no matter what you do to it. Did the person use the correct wire to weld the exhaust?
Check your exahust temperature before you apply Por15. Por 15 is good to 700F? which is about 350C?

im not entirely sure what kind of wire was use to weld.
im pretty sure its just surface rust.

I'm assuming it's just mild steel or aluminized? Completely normal and nothing to worry about. I'm guessing it was mig welded and the weld is most likely thicker than the basemetal and will not rust out for a long time. Even a quick shot of bbq paint will help. Untreated will be ok as well unless you are concerned about the appearance.
