On the same boat. I like trench coats, but I don't feel like spending a crapload of money on a trench coat.
I have a grey Zara Man trench coat that's pretty decent. It cost me $100, I think(it was a while ago, so I am a bit fuzzy on the number). I just looked up the prices and they can be pretty affordable.

Checked out Zara online and not really feelin' their trenches. Should have mentioned I want the classic look of the Sandringham or Kensington mid-length Burberry but I can't afford one

I have this one from Banana Republic, bought last year in size small, not quite my style. PM me if interested.

On the same boat-
Not sure to wear trench coat, pea coat or a winter windbreaker/rain jacket over my formal wear for work...

Depends your work (they do allow casucal), formal office settings, business casual, do you have to brave the element(rain, snow, wind), do you have other use for the jacket other than work (Going skiing, winter sports)
I have 5 to 6 jackets but I mostly use my north face. Is warm enough and block out the rain and wind. I do have a jacket from the bench that I wear when I want something more fancy(business casual, going on dates to a more formal place).
This one looks pretty good.

i ACTUALLY saw it at the bench in metro (they are also having a sale now). I was about to pull trigger if not being I have way way too many jackets right now.

My vote goes to the trench coat if you're wearing it over top of your tailor wear. Unless it's a very slim trench, it's meant to go over a suit. I have a pea coat and my understanding is that it should fit pretty close to the body and cut to about the same length as your suit jacket, so your shirt and jacket may peek out from underneath a pea coat.
Also the trench is water resistant where as a pea coat not so much. Wind breaker/rain jacket doesn't have the classic sexiness of a trench.
