They share a 6 year old and a pair of 3 year old twins and his in-laws live with them in a house they help pay for so things are going to be real complicated to untangle on top of the living expenses of each side needing at least a 3 bedroom home to house the kids.

What a nightmare it'll be for them.

Another friend is in the midst of a divorce that is 3 years in the making and they have twin girls (10 year old). Right now he pays for his ex-wife's housing ($4k/mo) AND pays child support (~$5k/mo) so even though he makes around $250k he's paycheque to paycheque. He is pretty depressed about his situation right now.

One thing I've noticed about Westerners is how they almost pride themselves in their isolationist mentality. Not everyone, obviously but it seems to be an agreed upon characteristic that both sexes are just driving off the beaten path to enjoy some pseudo sense of serene bliss within one's own thoughts and beliefs.

In today's day & age, it can be made easier with that glass-faced device in your pocket.

Sure, eventually people have career goals, financial goals and even relationship goals but still harbouring their isolationist thoughts.

Communication can never happen with such interference. If people believe their core existence is framed around this way of life, it sounds like an easy setup for a silent divorce.

A buddy came over last night for the games and he was telling me about his situation.

He and his wife have 2 kids, a few years back they (really he) ended up buying her childhood family home together. Their relationship started to fall apart, she ended up cheating on him, now they're separated going through a divorce, while still living in the same house together.

This has been going on for over a year now. They fight all the time, she'll call the cops, and he thinks she's trying to provoke him into getting violent so that she'll have an upper hand on the lawyer proceedings. They had the house appraised recently as he wants to sell and get the fuck out, but her and the lawyer reject the appraisal as it's "too high", WTF?

The problem is her dad and her can't afford to buy him out as the house has gone up considerably since the purchase years ago, so instead she's bleeding him dry in lawyer fees and ignoring/rejecting all offers his lawyer puts forward for spousal support to finalize the divorce.

So he's stuck in this feedback loop, living together, fighting all the time, with no end game, while watching the lawyers whittle away his, and by extension the children's financial future.

These situations are going to be less common as women are earning equal income, or are out-earning men nowadays, and/or are bringing significant assets into a marriage/common-law relationship.

honestly i think it'll depend on the expectations of said women. my guess most don't want to "date down". if equal earning income/assets is considered equal in their eyes, would have to see. i'm glad i'm not in today's dating market with apps and social media etc

saw this happen a few times with coworkers. guys reno'ing their basements in to suites for themselves so they have a home & to be near kids, etc. b/c neither can afford a proper home on their own or buy each other out.
