BC Budget
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...2026-9.7094451
Enough tidbits in here to normally bring out hondaracer from the woodworks.
1. Finally modified the senior property tax deferrals.
2. Higher income taxes yay
3. More PST on exempt services
4. Still didnt adjust luxury tax on cars to inflation
5. Government was drunk on real estate transactional fees and carbon tax revenues (Should have been used for I dunno, the environment instead of general revenues) that they are cooked now with a slowing real estate sector. Instead of acknowledging this they blame tariffs.
6. Can forgive some on the deficit on capital expenditures like the tunnel, patullo bridge, broadway + langley skytrain, st paul hospital, more health care spending etc
7. "We're not indebted as some on the other provinces!" isnt a good excuse IMO
8. Unpopular but they should bring back HST

Surprised this wasn't higher - if you're gonna do it (and they need to do it) they gotta rip the bandaid off and do it in one blow.

I'm really confused by this one -- so is Jeneroux still going to resign as he had previously indicated?
Also, Freeland and Blair's seats are still gonna be up for re-election. I don't know Toronto well enough to gauge how good the Liberals' chances are to win those 2 byelections, although I tend to believe that Toronto generally leans red more than it leans blue.
The Libs will need all 3 seats to obtain the weakest majority gov in existence. That still seems like it needs to many stars to align for comfort.

I'm kinda OK with a slim minority to keep Carney and Libs honest. This forces Libs to try and have dialogue, etc. and some of the other voices heard. Once a gov't gets that majority, sure things might be more efficient, but arrogance quickly seeps in.
So far, I think Carney has been able to do the majority of what he wanted to do. He is making some concessions to woo the AB separatist at the risk of BC ... that's how compromise works. And he is showing why he is way better of an international leader than PP could possibly be.

It was rumoured he was going to cross over then pp bulled him so he said he was going to resign. Now I guess he has changed his mind and is not going to resign.

Yeah, Richmond itself had its own wild floor crossing back and forth candidate a not too long ago
Anyone remember Joe Peschisolido?
Ran under Canadian Alliance in 2000 beating liberal Raymond Chan by only 2% of the vote. Crossed the floor to liberals in 2002. Then lost the 2004, 2006 and 2008 liberal nominations for Richmond to Raymond Chan, who held the seat until he lost in 2008 to Alice Wong. Then Peschisolido got the 2011 liberal nomination but lost to Alice Wong. Then he ran in Steveston-Richmond East where he won in 2015 and held the seat until 2019.

One of my softball teammates told me to “wake up” the other day in our off season chat thread in relation to the crossing.
I really thought that term had finally died with all the nutjobs.

Sorry I am not understanding what you are referring to here. Wake up about what? Is your softball teammate saying he supports Trump's demand to keep the Gordie Howe bridge closed? or is he trying to convince you that there are no US border agent or scrutiny issues at the various US-Canada crossings?

Maybe he's referring to the floor crossings?
I'm not sure what there is to wake up to? Maybe that guy should "wake up" to how Canada's political system actually works?

Yah the floor crossing
Altho I'm sure he'd say the same to all the other types of crossing as well hahaha
He definitely doesn't understand how floor crossings work, someone from RS made a video about it I watched and it's a really good concise explanation of it, but I will let him decide if he wants to post it or not lol

I'm not sure what there is to "wake up to" in regards to the floor crossings.
Legally it is absolutely fine -- both parties have had people crossed floors to join the other side, and I think Scheer and/or PP have said some pretty different things about past Liberal MPs crossing floors to join the Cons.
Ethically, it is somewhat questionable bcos there is bound to be a certain percentage of voters that voted for the party instead of the MP, so the floor crossing is a betrayal of those voters.

So the cons had a town hall in Nanaimo.

Quote:
During the town hall, comments ranged from residents, one attendee called for improvements to legal gun ownership; another for the legal ability to physically discipline their children; one brought attention to ostriches euthanized for avian flu in Edgewood by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency; one attendee suggested incarcerated criminals be sent to work camps; and another called for Canada to institute the death penalty for violent crimes or drugs, drawing attention to Singapore’s lethal sentencing laws.

IMO It's one of those it's not the system's fault the people don't understand the system.
And yeah I understand that party members are whipped to vote along party lines, but there are many cases where an MP has voted against the party and accepted the fate of being cast out.
Bill Casey in 2007 voted against his conservative party's budget. Why? Because he felt there was nothing in the budget to the benefit of his constituents. He got booted, and then won as an independent in 2008. That shows those people in his riding understood the assignment, elect the person who best represents you not the party itself.
Fact of the matter is that blue voters are trying SOOOO hard to frame this as some sort of underhanded thing by the Liberals/Carney instead of focusing inwards and acknowledging that something must be seriously wrong internally in their party for so many members to be leaving and crossing.

^^ 100% agree with you on this. I still believe there are good, level-headed people among the Conservatives (as well as in the GOP in the US), but it seems like their positions and voices are just getting drowned out by the radical idiots.
If you are one of those, and you continue to find that you and your constituents are being ignored, or maybe even ridiculed, at some point you are going to become disheartened and try to look for a way out, one way or another. And floor crossing is one of those ways to get out.
Mind you, I fully believe that the Michael Ma dude had joined the Liberals camp purely out of personal opportunistic reasons. I don't think his chances in the next election are gonna look all that good.

The current people in charge of the Conservative party want to win with their worldview uncompromised, rather than trying to win based on the reality that exists. Their voting base dogmatic and largely male. You can't win when half of the voting population doesn't like your worldview or your leader.
